Population: 18,870
County: Mobile County
About: Prichard is located in northwest Mobile County, Alabama. Originally, the City of Prichard, then known as Toulminville, was located at a rail station on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Cleveland Prichard purchased the land from the original owners in 1879 and intended to start a farming center. He purchased crops from local farmers and shipped them throughout the country. Prichard became known as the “Vegetable King,” and his model was replicated in other states. Prior to World War I, the town was quickly growing due to the arrival of shipbuilding companies which promoted economic growth. The town was incorporated in 1925, and basic city organizations, such as a police force, were established. In the 1960s, Prichard peaked at a population of roughly 47,000, but the population has declined since. Major employers left the area during the 1980s and 1990s, negatively affecting the local economy. Prichard is home to 18,870 individuals, of whom 91.2% identify as Black or African American. Almost 40% of the workforce is employed in educational services, health care, and social assistance. The Whistler Historic District contains houses and other buildings from the nineteenth century.
Fun Fact: Jimmie V. Adams, a retired four-star general in the United States Air Force, was born in Prichard.
