About: Crossville, located in northeast Alabama, was built as an agricultural community situated on the sandstone plateau of Sand Mountain. Crossville attracted its early settlers through its rich soil, rivers, and streams, ideal for farming. Sand Mountain was in an area of undisputed borders between Creeks and Cherokee, but White settlers increased due to the gold rush. After the gold diminished, white farmers continued to settle into the land, ultimately leading to the Trail of Tears. Crossville was given its name to symbolize its many crossroads. In the early 1800s when English and Scots-Irish immigrants settled into Alabama’s slice of Appalachia, Sand Mountain kept them isolated from others. White families lived there for generations, when eventually nearby poultry plants drew in hundreds of new immigrants.
In 2020, there were 28.3 times more white residents than any other race in Crossville. While the ratios are low, the minority populations continue to rise within DeKalb County. In 2000, Hispanics made up 5.5% of DeKalb County, and in 2019, made up close to 14.8%. While Crossville is still predominantly White, Hispanic students from nearby communities make up over 70% of the school’s student body as DeKalb County has one of the highest concentrations of Hispanic immigrants in Alabama.
Fun Fact: The 2022 high school football team is known as the “Crossville 21,” where 18 of the team members are Hispanic and not only go to school and play sports, but they also work at the poultry plants on the weekends.
